Wellness Eduction

Proper nutrition plays an important role in overall ocular wellness. Certain nutrients have been linked to a reduced risk of developing ocular diseases, including macular degeneration. The human body cannot synthesize the nutrients related to eye health, making nutrition and supplementation a vital part of your wellness plan.

  • Lutein, Zeaxanthin, & Mesozeaxanthin
These carotenoids make up the macular pigment, the layer of yellow pigment located in the center of the retina, at the macula. This pigment protects the macula from the harmful effects of blue lightas well as maintaining the overall health and function of the macula. Adding sources of Lutein, Zeaxanthin, and Mesozeaxanthin to your diet can prevent and slow the progression of Macular Degeneration. The carotenoids are available through dark leafy greens (kale, spinach, collards), corn, broccoli, and eggs. Dark, leafy greens offer the highest concentration of these nutrients.
  • Essential Fatty Acids
Healthy fats are a dietary need, supporting the nervous system, cell health, and immune system. EPA and DHA, two omega-3 fatty acids, have been linked to proper visual development, retinal function, and can support Dry Eye Syndrome treatments. EPA and DHA is found in fatty fish including salmon, tuna, mackerel, and trout.

It can be difficult to get the necessary amounts of these nutrients through diet alone. We recommend proper supplementation for our patients who would like to prevent or support treatment of ocular disease through nutrition.
