Our eye care team is here to care for all of your vision needs. We provide routine eye care for all ages, with an emphasis on wellness and prevention. Dr. Kim Walters specializes in routine eye care, specialized contact lens fittings, and the prevention and management of ocular disease. We are passionate about patient education and believe in empowering our patients through knowledge.

Dr. Kim Walters

Founder

Dr. Kim Walters founded Optix Eye Care in Weaverville, NC in 1998 and moved her practice to it’s current location in 2004. She specializes in primary optometric care for children and adults of all ages. Licensed by the North Carolina State Board of Optometry, she has a passion for the prevention and early diagnosis of ocular disease and is an expert in Macular Degeneration prevention and treatment and strives to educate her patients and the community on the dangers of blue light. She has extensive experience with identification and management of ocular disease, low vision services, contact lens fitting, and the application of lenses for visual abnormalities.

Dr. Walters attended Eastern Kentucky University, where she was a full scholarship student and Academic All-American. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree Cum Laude. She earned her Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry. Dr. Walters served two externships, one with Carolina Ophthalmology and one at Aldridge Eye Institute. She also practiced weekly at Mission Hospital’s Low Vision Center for seven years.

Dr. Walters is a member of the American Optometric Association, the North Carolina State Optometric Society, and the Mountain Optometric Society. She also serves as an Advisory Board Member for Mission Hospital’s Low Vision Center. She served as a board member for several years for the Banzai Consortium. She is a member of the Magellan Optometric Group and has been a member of IDOC (Independent Doctors of Optometric Care) for many years.

Dr. Walters spent part of her youth in Napa, CA and in the mountains of New Mexico. She has always felt at home in the mountains, and that is what attracted her to Weaverville. She is blessed with two daughters and enjoys sports, outdoor activities, running a practice and being a mom.

A native of Weaverville, NC she couldn’t imagine calling any place other than the mountains of WNC her home. Graduating Mars Hill College with unrelated aspirations, she unexpectedly found herself in the medical field and discovered she had quite a knack for wrestling with insurance companies. With more than 12 years of medical insurance and billing experience she joined the Optix team in 2010. Kickboxing is her favorite way to shake off a crazy day. She also enjoys treasure hunting in local thrift stores and eating her mom’s amazing cayenne chocolate, chocolate chip cookies… BEST COOKIES EVER!!!

A loving mother of two beautiful girls that share her passions of baking, hiking, and spending time outside - except when a hike to the waterfalls involves a trip to the Urgent Care for stitches afterwards! Jenny is a Hickory, NC native and graduate of the great school of UNC-Chapel Hill with a B.S. in Psychology. She loves her role at Optix Eye Care as a Certified Paraoptometric Assistant because of the passion for protecting people‘s vision as long as possible. After all, she loves to be able to see the things she loves to do and she’s sure everyone else does too!

Florida born, North Carolina raised; Kristen came to us full of energy! Being a fitness instructor and strong in her faith, she is a firm believer that a good workout of both body and mind promotes less stress and more success!!! She played division one soccer at Western Carolina University, then continued her love for the game and education at Catawba College. Kristen graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Communications where she discovered her passion for marketing. After college Kristen unexpectedly found her way into the medical field. She is coming to us eager to put all of her passions together while helping people grasp the importance of eye health along the way!

Self-described as “just an average person trying to live life to the fullest”, Kara believes that where words fail, music speaks and turns life’s challenges into inspiration each day. As a mother of an energetic young girl, she enjoys kicking back with a cup of coffee and her guitar. She has lived in the WNC mountains her whole life and loves breathing the sweet mountain air. She is a graduate of T.C. Roberson High School, and continued her education at AB-Tech. Kara has earned her Certified Paraoptometric title and enjoys helping others as a part of the Optix Eye Care team.

Summer moved to Asheville in March 2014 from Los Angeles, CA. with her husband and dog, after they fell in love with the food, the changing seasons, beautiful hiking, art, and the strong sense of community. She received her BFA in Design from Biola University and her MFA in Sculpture from California State University Long Beach. She started out in the optical field in New York City in 2005 and continued to practice as an optician through grad school and became a Certified Optician immediately following. Her experience in the optical field and her artistic training have given her a unique perspective and passion for helping others choose the best eyewear for their needs. After 10 years as an optician with 2 of the most prestigious and culturally distinctive eyewear brands, Oliver Peoples and RetroSpecs, she is thrilled to have the opportunity to build a showroom and select the quality frames to fill the space and pair it with the health care that Dr. Walters provides.

A Michigan native, Susan spent time in Pennsylvania and Australia before moving to Hendersonville, NC as a teenager and making the WNC mountains her home. She attended Appalachian State and University of North Carolina - Asheville until she found a home in Optix, which helped her find her true passion of fitting our amazing clientele with quality eyewear. She came to Optix with 3 years of clinical and clerical eye care experience and enjoys being able to learn from Summer as she works toward her NC State Optician Licensure. In her time away from Optix, she enjoys pursuing her health and wellness goals in the form of 5-6 day a week workouts and the occasional 5 or 8k race. Her weakness is Mexican food. A lifetime lover of music, Susan cannot drive anywhere without some tunes to sing along to. After playing saxophone for 8+ years, she is currently learning the ukelele!

A true believer in Shakespeare‘s quote, "The eyes are the window to your soul" - they are the memory makers, which capture those special moments in life with her family, friends and two Scottish "Terrorists"! She is a fanatic about capturing every moment in pictures, a lover of books and has a strong affection for dark chocolate. A Miami, FL native she moved to WNC at a young age and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. She attended AB Tech & Western Carolina University and has degrees in Business Administration & Marketing.

Roma comes to us with a mixture of creative and analytical experience. She has enjoyed working as a Director of Retail, including setting up stores, merchandising, graphic design, sign and logo design, screen print, and managing the Accounting Department at Renfro Valley Entertainment Center, in Kentucky, as well as directing Special Events and Concerts. A favorite accomplishment was helping with the set-up and opening of the Kentucky Artisan Center in Berea, Kentucky, where she was in charge of retail and merchandising. For fun, Roma loves fishing for salmon in Alaska, traveling, and spending time with her grandchildren. At Optix, you will find Roma at the front desk. She is especially thankful for the opportunity to welcome our patients and work with a caring team, dedicated to eye health and prevention.
